An odd bedfellow brings you an odd job: a Hammerite aqcuaintance tasks Garrett with clearing his name of a recent murder. The victim, another Hammerite, was a widely disliked man, but an unfortunate circumstance put immediate suspicion on Garrett's new client. Even worse, giving a verifiable alibi would send him to the gallows anyway, for on the night of the murder he was in the arms of a lover, something the Hammers apparently look rather dimly upon.
To solve this mystery you'll have to sneak through a fairly small but very well-designed Hammerite facility collecting clues as you go. Compared to "The Saint of Redmound," Morrgan's previous Hammerite-themed Dark Project mission, the architecture and ambiance are a step up, with a few particularly clever uses of certain sound effects. The mission is better-planned in the gameplay department as well: the patrol patterns are much tighter and present a greater challenge, and even with a generous system of rafters to get around with you'll have to make quick use of your various arrows to avoid getting caught. While the process of solving the mystery is pretty scripted, I still found it quite satisfying to uncover clues and figure out where to do next. Best of all, since Garrett is not *officially* a detective, there's no reason not to relieve the Hammers of valuables while you're there....
While it isn't breaking any new ground in the mystery genre, playing Sherlock in a Hammerite temple isn't something you do every day, making "Returning a Favor" a novel and enjoyable mission.
