The mission in question takes us through an ordeal in a haunted snowy castle in the mountains. Our objective is to grab a cursed book from the place for the Keepers, (optionally) find out what happened to members of the previous expedition to this place (some nice DnD references!), grab some loot, and get the hell out. And while the premise seems pretty straightforward and not groundbreaking at all, the devil's in the details.
As we traverse the mansion, we uncover the story of three power-hungry brothers, each vying for the book's power and deep down in their own damnation. We creep through haunted hallways, spider-infested corridors and deal with guards turned into mushroom-infected thralls to a strange fungal hive mind. Each location is distinct in its' style and a lot has been interestingly reimagined - certain enemy types, like the aforementioned guards, spider nests that spawn monsters indefinitely until destroyed (brr!), huge apelike ghouls...
But it's the atmosphere of uncertainty and creeping dread that does the most work - from the first spider hisses that we overhear while walking through the main gate until the very end, when we thank the Builder that we managed to get out alive... it never left me, the fear that behind a seemingly well known by now corner something new and monstrous might appear. It makes me extremely happy that in this day and age, there are still new ways being found to create a stellar Thief experience.
The loot and items are logically placed, with some secrets cleverly hidden. I have only found one (and probably one of the easier ones to get), but I was never a secret - hunter myself, so...
Things I didn't like? Some people might dislike the lack of lockpicks and the key-hunting related with this, but personally speaking, it never hampered nor made progress more linear in any way. The library area could be a bit scarier or fleshed out more (the tragedy of sister's death), but that feels nitpicky of me. Also, three treebeast-types of enemies is a lot. And the arachnophobia.
So many spiders.
Either way, thoroughly recommended. Do yourself a favor and download this one. Just prepare to be scared.
