After a pair of promising but rough prequels, Rocksbourg really hits its stride here. Ink & Dust is just a far more coherent experience than the first two missions. Again, the author excels at pushing the engine to its limits: spectacular architecture, scripting, custom AI, and perhaps the best and most frightening soundscape in any FM. The readables are frequently still janky in translation, but not enough to derail. The level feels massive and has no map, but is smartly enough designed that it’s difficult to become lost or frustrated. Absolutely essential for puzzle fans and spook hunters (and you really don’t need to have played the first two to get into it).
Biggest surprise: The elemental areas – 8 mini-levels tailored around a specific theme, each accessed by solving a great little brain teaser.
Worst bit: As with all the Rocksbourg missions, some unfair hidden switches. Fortunately, none of them are mission-critical
Best bit: The Dark Zone. Thief meets Silent Hill. Terrifying and terrific.
