One of my favorite things about the first game is that every mission introduces something new to overcome. The first mission had spiders, human guards and help, marble floors. In the second mission we're introduced to supernatural elements of the world. The religious order, undead, metal surfaces. And new tools as well, like moss arrows and holy water. And this approach stays through the whole game.
This time we need to rescue someone from a Hammerite prison factory, but to get there we need to go through the backyard - the mines. Which are haunted. The most awesome element of it is that zombies aren't introduced as walking corpses. They're introduced as corpses, laying on a floor. One of the most memorable moments for me was when I picked up a decaying body to move it from my way and, after making a few steps with it on my shoulder, it suddenly woke up and attacked! Scared the [Karras] out of me! And another discovery was is that zombies can't be killed with conventional weapons. They rise back. So you need some help in form of holy water. It spiced up things considerably.
The tricky part of the mission is the prison factory. It's very claustrophobic with samey tight corridors and patrolling hammerites. While the structure isn't that complex, you still need to pay attention so you don't get lost. I also think it's the first time we're introduced to a security camera.
Story-wise it's also fascinating. We learn about the order, it's decline, it's workings. We learn about how Garrett fits into the City.
All around, a great mission. It was the one mission that convinced me I'm playing something truly special and one of a kind back in the day.
