Garrett has been doing well for himself to be able to afford a little home on the outskirts of Dayport. It was quite old, and while the wooden interior was in bad shape, the walls stood sound. He'd never lived in anything more glamorous than an apartment, so the house was a welcome change.
To help him repair it, he hired the most helpful person he could for the cheapest wage, who happened to be a woman by the name of Eleanor, and they started repairing the house from the top down.
By the time both attic rooms were reasonably well repaired, Garrett was fond enough of her to buy her some decent furniture and allow her to stay in the room next to his. He ended up taking the room in the west, which had a cold draft and a gaping hole in the roof that could only be patched when it wasn't raining.
Early the morning of February 1st, Garrett returned home, opening the front gate by unlocking the lock on the wall surrounding his home. Upon shutting the gate, he found the lock on the inside of the gate missing. When he turned to face the front door, he noticed a note beside the front door. Perhaps there really was a reason for that twinkle in the eye of the man who sold him the house . . .
