This big fan-made campaign deserves exactly those words I put into the title - I rarely played the fan-mission that evoked such mixed, contradicting feelings as this one. We are play for the Reuben (not the Reuben-leader of Thieves' Guild, but other, younger), who lives not in the City (yet) but in the city on nearby Bale island. He got framed by some mysterious order - which is somehow connected with werewolves - and now tries to destroy the order and hence following the steps of one of the agents... towards the City.
On the good side, I can say that missions and their layouts are quite varying: misty city streets, small mansion, haunted mountain castle, port/warehouse complex, huge paddle steamer ship, forest with haunted church and ruins of small village nearby... even some areas from main game are reused though I can't say that author added anything creative into them - except new puzzles and jumping challenges (and "Enforcer infiltration"-like event). I particularly liked the stealth challenges : the author really nailed them with the right combo of tile floors, lightening, and the careful placement of guards. The story is also quite interesting to follow - it includes adventures in two cities and even at sea.
The missions are quite hard - both puzzle-wise and acrobatics-wise. Yes, lots of different puzzles and keyhunts patiently await for you in almost all ten missions of Gold Edition. I recommend you to have the walkthrough at hand while playing this campaign. Some puzzles and tasks are interesting, some are boring (like "visit 100% of streets to explore the city district"), some are frustrating (like some objects and living beings appear only after specific actions and it is not always clear where and when they appear and what you should do with them). The amount of guards is high, and I seriously doubt that campaign can be ghosted. This combo of puzzles and lots of sensitive guards leads to some frustration and requires you to be extremely patient and attentive. Counting the numerous problems with TDS physics and player character movement, I would also say that jumping challenges clearly don't help either, and campaign sadly leaves some bitter aftertaste. I also noticed that while it hasn't gamebreaking bugs, there were only two testers (aside from the author) for 10 missions - which is insufficient for such big piece of work - as I think.
The upped (comparing to the main game) difficulty means that this campaign definitely would not be the best choice if you are looking for some simple and casual experience. However, if you are into hardcore, challenging missions, it could interest you. Author clearly was creative with this one - even maybe too creative and pushed difficulty too far. It also could easily frustrate you if you don't like the physics of Deadly Shadows. In any case, it is strange and really memorable campaign with which I had rocky, love-hate relations and even made ragequit in the middle (I returned back after two months, and finished campaign). My rating is not exactly 8 and more like 7,5/10.
