Cinder Notes takes you on a brief adventure through a waterlogged golden haze, complete with a detour to nab a painting. Visually, it's very nice. It's hard to take a poorly-composed screenshot; the author has an excellent eye for scenery. Every time I stopped to lean out a window or peek out from under an awning, I felt like I was looking at a painting, and the level feels designed with that specifically in mind. And the soundscape, more sea breezes and gull-calls than your typical City ambiance, was crisp and immersive. It's one of the prettiest missions I've played. If I were Garrett, I'd have been too tempted to stretch out in a sunbeam and take a nap.
It's fairly easy. The puzzles in the seminary involved some fun guard-dodging, and it's a nice touch that you can get into the library in two different ways (one of which is pretty creative). One area felt unfinished, rather than horror-by-implications; there just weren't enough crumbs to build intrigue, mechanically or environmentally, despite the spooky music. I climbed out thinking I must've missed something. Still, there are rabbit holes to go down in this lovely, sun-drenched city -- plenty of readables, a couple of little nooks and crannies you're not obligated to check out.
It's fun, works well with its space, and feels attentively and lovingly crafted.
