This mission is a real stinker. It is arguably the oldest mission on the site (according to the sites own listing at the time of writing) With only a template mission, and a test mission being older. However this is not why this mission is bad. Even running this mission is a bit more complicated than you might assume. The only files provided are a readme, and a mis file, not miss20.mis, or similar. It's downwego.mis. So without renaming it, I hope you like running it through dromed!
I naturally renamed it to miss3.mis, and after a very pleasent time robbing lord baffords, I was able to decend into the FM. Only to find myself staring at a starry night sky. This mission starts with you facing straight into the skybox that makes up the "walls" of the mission. The objectives are both blank, so I went looking for the tomb mentioned in the description.
The map itself is crawling with Guards. Most of which have bugged speech. In fact, any time I mention anything. Just assume it is bugged. Your footsteps, bugged. The objectives? bugged. The Windows of the buildings? Bugged. This mission fundementally does not work. The kinder half of me suggests maybe it worked better in old-dark or through dromed?
Eventually I worked out the giant field covered in guards contained a giant hole, and smaller, less giant hole. The smaller hole was the front enterance to the tomb, while the big hole was the back entrance. The big hole also contains a ladder that you need to climb, So I lept for that ladder, bounced off it, and plunged to my death. Oh well, time to load my quicksave, ladders do that sometimes.
Load failed.
Oh dear.
OK so I did a repeat of that without dying, from the very start, because saving does not work. I managed to make it into the tunnel that held the back entrance. On route through there I encountered a locked door, a suprisingly well hidden and detailed sewer room (In comparison to the rest of the map I mean) and finally, I dropped into the tomb, and completed the first objective. Yay. The second objective, as mentioned in the readme, does not function, so I did some exploring, stole every last thing on the map, drowned the priest in his bookcase/bath hybrid(???), and slammed my face into every wall of the map. I did such a good job of this, I managed to escape into the void beyond one of the walls.
Well. That's me done with the mission. Broken, crowded, possibly incomplete, and very very old. But hey, if your reading this, you either looked for a mission rated 1/10, or are, like me searching through the oldest missions on this site, and after playing this you are down about as low as you can go. So the only way forward, is up.
A quick note before I end this. Remember of course back when this was produced, making FMs was significantly harder than it is today. It's easy now to mock these early efforts, but this was june 1999, the person who made this was moving into unknown territory. While I am happy to mock missions like this for their objective poor quality, they are still ultimately, the building blocks that we learned from, and built upon to get where we are today.
