In this FM your objective is to carry the corpse of a hired killer to the manor of his employer, who you must kill as well. Once this is done, you are to place their bodies next to each other in the manor's treasure room to make it look like the result of a bloody dispute. While on Normal you are treated to a fairly standard mansion burglary and nothing else, on Hard and Expert the caveat here is this: as tempting as it may be, you are not allowed to steal any loot from the manor. It's surprising how this affects the general sense of the gameplay. I actually had to do a double take and remind myself not to touch several items on the way to the objective. Combined with the fact that you are also not allowed to knock out any guards, it is pretty much a mission of pure, skilful walking and climbing. This is not something particularly new for you regular ghosters out there, but it added a certain degree of tension and restraint I don't usually reserve for myself when playing Thief. The architecture is boxy, wide (sometimes incredibly so), and somewhat minimalistic. There is little of the horror vacui that newer and more sophisticated FMs are full of. But I think this minimalism is more true to the Thief TDP/Gold spirit, and I think it affords a certain sense of spaciousness that is sometimes just missing in new FMs. I am a major fan of the deep appreciation for elegance and intricacy that they have (Intertheft being a recent favourite of mine) but playing missions like these reminds me of what else a mission can look like. I think here the author clearly thought a lot about how atmosphere can be created out of very simple shapes and textures, rather than painstakingly adding more and more particular details to create the impression. There is a certain skill in this I feel. My one complaint is that the climax is awkwardly scripted, I may have done something wrong during my playthrough, but if you play your cards right (and not get killed) basically you are confronted with a dangerous situation in one moment, then suddenly you find you can resolve it quite easily and are left to yourself to complete the rest of your objectives as if nothing happened. It's a bit bizarre. Nonetheless, a rather good early FM for which I felt inspired to write a review.
