Rogue's honour, on some levels, is incredible. It contains a fully working ingame store, A room with a machine that, when damaged, messes with gravity, a fully working ingame cutscene.
Genuinely, this mission impresses me on a technical level, particularly given this was made in 2000!
Unfortunately, in all other elements, the mission falls short. First of all, this mission is ugly. The streets are unpleasant to explore. This is not helped by the fact that going "out of bounds" is seemingly required for reaching multiple locations. Once you get inside the actual mushroom caves, The number of guards is extremely high, and the lantern guards in the caves are irritating to deal with. that said, the mission does pick up at this stage, with plenty of fun encounters and rooms present. I also do play on expert, so the guard count is presumably, self inflicted. Emerging into the mansion that takes up the third act of the mission, leads to more of the same, with a vast number of guards, and actually some pretty high quality brushwork. Though the upper floor employs a pattern that looks like the classic "jumping carpets" but is actually made of stone. A mean trick that doesn't make much sense from a house design standpoint.
The final room is a puzzle room, you have to replace the orb with another object, and also need to remove the protection the orb has to stop you touching it.
Unfortunately, this last step is extremely buggy, and has been since release. A sigificant amount of the time, one of the required steps just fails. It is ironic that a mission I praise on it's technical achivements ultimately has a gamebreaking bug in the last 5 minutes. I have found comments on this issue dating back to 2001, so this is certainly not a newdark issue.
Over all, Rogue's honour is a technical marvel, it is really REALLY cool to see a working store ingame, and some of the other tricks it pulls. Viewed as a vehicle for showing these tricks off, it's a complete success.
Unfortunately, as a thief mission, it is ultimately a bit on the lackluster side, and the city streets will leave a bad impression when first starting the mission.
