I was 50/50 on even reviewing this one, I enjoyed the original mission (So much, I actually rated it a 7, above the average scores awarded to it!) However, I am glad I did. Let me start off by saying: most changes made are positive. Between versions some sections got expanded, a ladder was added to the crypt in town, and Garrett now prefers the name "Ryalla". Yes, this is in fact one of the first in that rare set of missions with female protagonists. A fact which does not have any notable gameplay effect, but which I still am in full support of.
Plot is the same as last time, with only minor differences, mostly coming down to the change in identity of the protagonist.
Unfortunately, it's in the gameplay department where the mission suffers; multiple mechanics broke in the transition. For example there are a set of frogbeasts in one section that I am fairly certain are meant to be hostile, but aren't. More disruptively, there is an objective item that now slows you down when you pick it up. It can be fixed by picking up and dropping a corpse, but I only discovered this after playing a one woman game of fetch across the entire mission, (throwing it ahead of me to avoid the slowdown, before picking it up, and throwing it again).
There are some new areas added, but most of them are... ugly. A boxy set of rooms that feel completely superflous, the newly added area over the river also seems to allow for some disasterous sequence breaking if your willing to climb on the outer railing. I don't think it's possible to softlock yourself, but it does let you access parts of the map which were clearly never supposed to be accessed.
At the end of the day, I liked Ranstall keep T1, and I think most of the changes in T2 are positive. The only issue is that there are just enough parts that are broken, that I cannot in say it is as good as the original. Which is a shame.
