I recently replayed that mission and have to say: I enjoyed it. Again.
Bonehoard defined the tomb mission genre in Thief.
In the meantime many great other tomb missions were made. We have seen awesome work like the Catacombs of Knoss and many others of the like.
Sure, Bonehoard now looks meek to that. But remember, back in 1998 the average PC had less power than your phone today.
Memory limits had to be considered.
So, even with that in mind Bonehoard can be enjoyable even nowadays.
The soundtrack is alright, the atmosphere, Garrett remarks...
It´s funny that when you steal the horn the burricks get angry at you. Hehe.
The only thing I really dislike here is the damn fireshadow. Yeah, they added it so that players wouldn´t softlock themselves. But then, it´s easily one of the most annoying enemies in the game. I mean, in TDP I never softlocked myself, so why add this annoying enemy in the Gold version? Just because some dullards might waste all their fire arrows on the enemies? I mean, when TDP came out, many magazines still didn´t know how to handle the rather new stealth genre, but about one year later most people should have got the hang of that...this is the only reason I substract a bit from the gameplay. At least they should have made the area in a way that this burning hobo can´t run around the whole crypt. I often have him following me through the area, even where he has absolutely no business. Oh, and as much as I like the mission, the jumping from beam to beam was also never my favorite part. No hard feelings.
Aside that rant, Bonehoard still remains the big granddaddy mission for all newer tomb mission.
