"Resurgence - The Ancient Crown" puts you in the shoes of a private eye hired to investigate the theft of a certain valuable item.
A great deal of care was put into the presentation of the narrative. Consistent with the theme and the setting, you get guns, phone calls, even stationary subway train (man, I wonder if there's an FM with a working underground; I've seen 3 or 4 missions with subway but it's never actually operating :P). While gameplay lacks the feeling of participation, badly needed for a detective story to feel lively, it still does enough to make it interesting. Plus, the lack of sophisticated plot devices integrated into gameplay seems kind of understandable for an FM that old.
The obvious weakness of the mission is how poorly it looks, even for its time. If you consider it's got cam vators, custom objects and conversations, you'd think some more care could've been given to brushing and texturing. Both interiors and exteriors feel too plain, empty, and blocky.
Also, the additional objective on expert difficulty is not integrated into the story. If you don't complete objectives in the anticipated order, it breaks the narrative.
There's never enough detective stories in Thief, so I was happy to play another one and it still felt reasonably satisfying, despite obviously not having aged too well.
