A wondrous re-imagining of sorts of the often reviled Thieves' Guild original mission from the first game, Rogues' Lair draws you in further and further into the shadowy underbelly of The City after beginning with a simple vase heist turned awry.
Although vaguely reminiscent of the scenery and plot change as the player continues their journey as seen in Into the Odd or The Sword, this mission stands entirely on its own both in terms of artistic vision and novel technical features. The Downwinders' Guild has been busy with their dark craft in the region, as a garish veiled gambling den soon reveals itself to be the mere front of a base of operations with its bowels far into the heart of the city underneath. A civilization lies down below, half-buried in ruin, half-restored to some shade of its former glory by the industrious thieves, while hinting of otherworldly magic and forgotten architecture. What lies away, out of the sight of even its crafty new occupants, is a castle manor where things really begin to unravel for Garrett.
Rogues' Lair offers nearly everything a Thief fan wants: there's the joy of a classic break-in, some night life, avoiding hooded rivals, smartly placed loot and ratios without stressing the player if they forgot a coin stash or two, a reliance on observation and deduction for secrets or hidden areas, disconcerting enemy creatures, hints of brooding magic, puzzle-solving, interesting and useful new weapons and items, and lavishly decorated manors and mansions. Although not as verbose in its storytelling as other fan missions, the minimalism approach works nicely if not reinforcing the big surprise that awaits players if they are sure to explore everything the under-city offers.
In short, play this mission. Whether a new cut-purse to the Thief universe or a quick-fingered veteran, you're going to have a good time—with one hidden area being particularly unforgettable.
