Belboz is a name that is starting to get a certain level or recognision. As well as making the awful docklands, they are also responsible for Garretts revenge, the Tricksters gem mine series, and of course, this mission.
Honestly; I have gone from dreading his missions, to absolutely looking forward to them. Pretty impressive as he is one of the few authors to get a 1 star review from me for one of their earlier works.
I think it's safe to say city missions are one of the most popular mission types ever. These days, a city mission will consist of a huge number of densely packed buildings, each containing a maze of entrances and exits, no matter where you look there will be a secret, a piece of loot, or at least some form of setpiece. This mission however, is nothing like those modern alternatives.
We once again step into the role of Ryalla. A female thief I have seen previously in Ranstall keep under a different author. (The best guess I have is that it was part of the contest this mission was supposed to be part of). This fact isn't really dwelled upon, but it is nice to not have to not have to worry about how garrett is doing 6000 jobs and still having issues paying rent. The objective of this mission is to track down a drunk. Follow them home, and then steal some documents. Naturally it's not quite that simple, but really that's not the important part of the mission.
The plot, and even the gameplay of this mission is passable at best, but the real meat is found in the design work. This mission is beautiful, It drips with atmosphere, as well as rain, and the streets are, at least for the time fantastic. There is also a remarkable lack of anything to do in these streets. Large chunks of space lay untouched by patrols or loot. this... actually works in the atmospheres favour, but when combined with the confusing layout, can lead to a certain amount of walking around in circles acomplishing nothing.
I should also mention that while amazing for the time, these days it's graphical acomplishments do creak a little, and the indoor sections look downright primitive even for the time. Unfortunately this mission has not aged desperately well, and while I still think it's good looking, those used to HD textures and hyperdetailed brushwork will be disappointed
Prehaps it's not the best mission if your time is limited, but if you are willing to spend some time getting lost, and to get a little damp, this mission is a fun little city to explore.
