I spent over 10 hours in both missions combined, (6+ in the second alone!) All secrets found including the chess pieces (yes, I needed some help!).
While I found the first mission was good, (a fairly nice village in the woods, with a central, busy inn). I think it was leading us to a false sense of security, preparing us for the second which was outstanding. A strange hotel, with a ton of secrets (yes, a ton!) it is well designed and built to be be just a little disorienting so you're forced to navigate through it in unusual ways.
The hotel is the setting, but the atmosphere and story are quite honestly superb. I was tensed up nearly the whole way through, with a feeling of dread. A couple of times I literally jumped and swore out loud at the surprises. The authors used sound incredibly well to create an uncomfortable environment, just as it was a major strength in the original games, something that I think some FM's have forgotten about.
The story will lead you farther down a path of heartbreak and horror to a beautiful ending. An almost perfect experience.
Needless to say this FM should not only be a "Must Play" for all Thief fans, but honestly I would recommend an install just to play this mission.
Yes, it's that good.
