The only thing the difficulty levels affect aside from extra penalties is how much money you have to purchase gear at the start - on Expert, you only have enough money to afford 20 Water Arrows, whereas on the other difficulties you can buy 30 of them and still have enough left over for other stuff.

On Normal, it's possible to complete the main objective without having to open the secret door to the crypt. On Hard, you can finish it without venturing into the lower crypt. On Expert, though, you have no choice but to venture in to confront the undead menace lurking below the surface waiting to strike.

You can allow the undead to venture to the surface to fight the living, as they'll survive long enough to dispatch several guards before going down, and thereby providing a much easier opportunity to get out, but there's any possible survivors who'll be alert afterwards who may cause potential problems, especially when moving on the tile floors of the chapel. If you want to take out the two undead that are summoned, it is recommended that you ambush them with Mines in the upper crypt after knocking out the two guards and moving them out of the way (Expert allows a maximum of three KOs), so that both the undead who stay behind and the living on the surface don't hear the commotion.

As always, kills with Holy Water Arrows don't register in the game's results screen, but if you want the valuable mask the undead leader is wearing, you'll have to kill him when his bodyguard isn't around. Besides, killing him completes a secret objective.

There are a fair number of lights that the living guards will relight, which is most prominent in the extremely well-lit upper crypt.
