it's the Watcher that followed Morag back from the Black Island and which grows stronger as the water levels rise. there are numerous references to it in readables scattered about the map. it's also a riff on a famous encounter from "Amnesia: the Dark Descent".
i think your brain does a better job of antialiasing unfiltered textures automatically (once you've adjusted to them), while also subconsciously filling in the missing details so paradoxically the textures look sharper. also, the colours pop more because they haven't been aliased into a muddy mess. who knew? props to the author.
i'll always remember this mission for the richness of one standout, highly detailed and opulent interior -- all angular inky shadows cast across velvet drapes, and firelight glowing on polished wood and stone, as if lit by Bernardo Bertolucci and painted by Van Eyck.
oh, and the moment when the shadow demon emerges with a monstrous roar in the shattered courtyard of that haunted underground keep.
